The standard Lorem Ipsum passage is:

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incidididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. Ut enim ad minim veniam, quis nostrud exercitation ullamco laboris nisi ut aliquip ex ea commodo consequat. Duis aute irure dolor in reprehenderit in voluptate velit esse cillum dolore eu fugiat nulla pariatur. Excepteur sint occaecat cupidatat non proident, sunt in culpa qui officia deserunt mollit anim id est laborum.

Its purpose is to reproduce the flow of the English language, which is why it is not a completely Latin copy. Instead, there is a mixture of Latin words and invented terms.

What is the translation of Lorem Ipsum in English?

Lorem Ipsum was originally taken from a Latin text by the Roman philosopher Cicero, a connection that Latin scholar Richard McClintock made in the 1980s. Over the centuries, it has undergone considerable modifications, with words being deleted, shortened and added. The word 'lorem', for example, is not a true Latin word, but a shortened version of the word 'dolorem', meaning pain.

This makes the current fictitious text impossible to translate into English. However, the original source was translated in 1914 to mean:

"Nor is there anyone who loves or pursues or desires to obtain pain per se, because it is pain, but from time to time there are circumstances in which fatigue and pain can bring him great pleasure".

Why is the text Lorem Ipsum used?

In short, we use the text Lorem Ipsum because it is meaningless. It is simply a filler text, which should not contain any meaningful message.

Content is meant to stand out on a page. Therefore, if a designer or client is looking at a template and its layout, they can easily become distracted by the writing and lose sight of the design itself.

It also looks and reads more natural than simply repeating a phrase such as 'content here' or 'sample content'. The addition of placeholder text Lorem Ipsum simply gives an idea of how the final page might look.

Where does Lorem Ipsum come from?

The text can be traced back to ancient Rome. Many of the words and phrases in today's copy of Lorem Ipsum can be found in a book on ethics from 45 BC, written by the Roman philosopher Cicero.

However, researchers believe that the text was not used as a placeholder in its current form until 1500. When a typographer took the original text and twisted its order to create a book of specimens.

Although in the 1920s we developed new technologies^th e 21^st centuries, Lorem Ipsum has remained our favourite filler text. In the 1960s, the text was printed on dry transfer sheets and used by architects and advertisers. Then, in the 1980s, it was adopted in the word processing models of desktop computers.

Nowadays, you can find this dummy text in almost any software designed for writers or designers, from Microsoft Word templates to WordPress and Google Docs web projects. Quite a journey through time from its humble beginnings!
